 100 Black Men

 of America

Parent and Peer Leadership Program/Peer Leadership Program

The original program was designed and initiated for 5th grade male students in 1991 at Gwynns Falls Elementary School in Baltimore City.  The overall goal of the Parent And Peer Leadership/Peer Leadership Program is to prepare both male and female youth for leadership roles.

The program expanded in 1988 and now includes 5th grade female students. The program is also operating in Pimilco Elementary, Franklin Square and Mary E. Rodman.  Approximately 250 students participate in the program each year.  The expansion was the result of the formation of a unique partnership between the:

  • 100 Black Men of Maryland, Inc.

  • Baltimore City Public Schools

  • Social Security Administration

Approximately 65 Social Security Administration employees volunteer to serve as mentors and receive training from the Baltimore Mentoring Institute.  As a result of the success of the program, numerous awards have been received.  Some of the most recent awards received were:

  • A Certificate of Excellence from the Public Employees Roundtable

  • A Certificate of Special Recognition from One to One, the Baltimore Mentoring Partnership

  • A Mayor’s Citation from the City of Baltimore

  • The Athena Award, for the mentoring program of the year from the Maryland State Mentoring Resource Center

  • The Governor's Citation for the mentoring program of the year in the State of Maryland.
