Educational Programs

We support educational programs that provide opportunities for students to develop their ability to compete successfully in the classroom and subsequently, in the workplace.  Some of those programs are:

  • Peer Leadership Program (PLP) - A mentoring program that began in 1991 and is a partnership between 100 Black Men of Maryland, Inc., Baltimore City Public Schools and the Social Security Administration (SSA).

  • Job Readiness Program - A program designed to support innovative job readiness training for at risk high school youth who have shown no aptitude or interest in pursuing a post-secondary education.

  •  The Basketball Academy is based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Academy is made possible by a collaborative partnership between the Baltimore City Public School System, the 100 Black Men of Maryland, Inc., and the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

  • After School Tutorial Program - A program designed to provide math enrichment for middle school students, especially males.

  • African American History Challenge - A program for middle schools that seeks to provide “friendly” competition among students from their reading of “Before The Mayflower”(Bennett) and “They Came Before Columbus” (Van Sertima).  The winning school represents the Maryland Chapter in a national contest at our annual National Conference.

  • Wimberly Initiative – A school based program designed to reduce student  referrals to special education classes and to support feasible exits from special education and subsequent success in the academic mainstream.

  • African American Inventors Contest - The purpose of this contest is to inform elementary school students of the many contributions that African American inventors made in our daily lives.  The completion is divided into two parts:

    • Written – Intended to further research and writing skills

    • Oratory – Intended to foster team building, public speaking skills and self confidence
